The Good Life - 12/31/2022 - Swim in the rain, or swim in the clear

I am excited for 2023 like I have not been excited for any new year before. It’s because I’m living now less year to year as on a life roller-coaster, like a man on rails rising, turning and plummeting from one year to the next, attendant more to necessity than will; and it’s because the days of necessity are coming more to an end with our empty nest, as well as our recognized fatigue and readiness to adopt a simpler, humbler, way of life in a more out of the way place, with fewer demands on our time, and space and freedom to more fully breathe. I hope that Yumiko and I can make it to that dreamed of time and place, which is still a few years out. We’re working hard at it, both of us still giving 100% at work. But there’s relief in dreaming, and excitement in anticipation. I told Yumiko that New Year 2023, next year, could be her last in the USA, which gave us both pause to think and consider how we must appreciate and enjoy every remaining day in the United States before we depart—possibly for good.

There is something thrilling in change. Even for the old, and maybe especially for the old.
