The Good Life - 11/20/2022 - The sleep of youth *

Updated: Nov 23, 2022

Yesterday washed over me like a wave, a good wave, churning and heavy and bubbling with crashing foam. I’ve known this experience before. It’s the consequence of killing an old life in favor of a new life, in a new place, with new things, and streets we don’t know and unfamiliar shops and new habits to form and build and live. Yumiko and I have done this together so many times, the only constant being one another, our kid and the scratched up gold rings we each wear on our finger, symbolizing the one constant which can never be left behind. Let the old lives go. Goodbye Arcata, so long Osaka, nice to know you Santa Barbara, thanks for all the fish Shizuoka and Irvine and Menifee—all far beyond in the rear-view mirror. It’s interesting how I almost never think of those places. Like good books read and given away for someone else to enjoy. And now, that wave of what’s new crashes over me. This new place becoming home. I want to take Yumiko out for ice cream today, yet I don’t know where to get ice cream here. But I’ll find a place. And it’ll be a fun little adventure for us to get there and try. More delightful churning within the wave, spilling on, rolling in towards our new shore; where, in a month or two Yumiko and I will pull ourselves smiling onto the sand. We’ll have arrived then in this new place. And our new lives will have begun again.
