The Good Life - 11/17/2022 - The man who almost died *

I saw a man almost die yesterday. It was after my ocean swim, and there was not a thing I could do to stop it. He survived. Not like the woman I watched die three years ago under the exact circumstance. Death is sneaky that way. Always leering over our left shoulder. After yesterday’s event, I thought a lot about what, if anything, I could have done to prevent that man’s near death. Not a damn thing it seems. The best I could do then, as ever, is to become and remain a compassionate man in every moment, a man of action within the scope of my reach, and a sober man of reason; calmly acknowledging my own death’s nearness at hand and proclivity to pounce unexpected. I imagine that man who almost died yesterday was awake, like me, this morning in the pre-dawn hours thinking similar thoughts. Close calls with the end do that sometimes.
