The Good Life - 09/02/2023 - The rain indoors

Updated: 6 days ago

Rain now in the morning. I can hear it now out there in the dark. But the rain here is never really in earnest, never genuine or very real—like a tourist visiting for a day or two each year, gone again tomorrow, hardly a memory. The rain in California isn’t like Japan, where rain lives like a local, stays with you for days and weeks, is never fully gone. It’s best when you needn’t go out, in the spring and summer, when doors and windows are kept open, and the shutters and shoji flung wide, the warm rain just outside. The atmosphere of rain comes indoors then, everything but the wet: the sound, the smell, that pelting and dripping sense. It’s best when you needn’t go out, and can just sit or rest inside amidst the gently falling rain.
