Yumiko and I said our goodbyes yesterday in turns. I took the day shift while Yumiko took the evening and night. We were helping our daughter move into her new apartment, the last under our patronage before she’s off and on her own. She’s left the university dormitories and has moved into off-campus housing at one of those big, purpose-built faculties designed to segue young adults from communal living into something more like independence. I spent the day with Emily, moving boxes and buying essentials, and we had a nice lunch together, and coffee, where we talked over big ideas and stood together on tippy-toe attempting to gaze into her future. Later, I changed places with Yumiko, who spent the evening with Emily, decorating and shopping for the new place. They had dinner together, with Yumiko getting in last words in terms of parental send off and well wishes, before then coming home to me and the dogs. It was a good day. A day of consequence which frankly I hadn’t seen coming. A strong day of commencement, and of duty, and a day chock full of human purpose—as well as very much quite satisfying familial punctuation.
