Yesterday was special. A day Iâve been training for for years. I literally spent all day sitting in the garden. Well, I did go for an ocean swim in the early morning. And I did enjoy two long dog walks with Yumiko, plus lunch together (hand-made onigiri and miso soup!). But mostly, I sat in my Adirondack chair and read. I opened the big umbrella for some shade and just sat and read a fascinating book for hours and hours and hours. The only thing that broke up my peace was the still deeper peace of closing my eyes for a short nap, which I did a few times each hourâreading, napping, reading, dozing, repeat. Yesterdayâs accomplishment was as satisfying as anything ever in my life: as good as finishing school, and getting married, becoming a dad, or writing a book. The biggest achievement of my life in factâto reach a point where I can just sit quietly in my garden all day long, with just my book, my thoughts, some sweet rest, and a desire for absolutely nothing more.
