The Good Life - 08/05/2023 - Becoming simply fit
Five weeks. It’s been five weeks of daily swimming after work. Yet, my body doesn’t seem to care very much about my efforts. Sure, the gut is largely gone. And my muscles have become taut and tone, and my skin has browned and become well seasoned with ocean salt—yet that’s it, nothing special, I can’t seem to progress much further than simply “fit”. And that’s fine, better actually. As it’s good to be beyond the pale of any need or interest in being anything more than simply fit. Such a simple and humble desire. Just to reach and keep a good weight. To stay flexible, with good range of motion. To walk without too much pain and to be able to sit straight in my chair and stay calm all day long. To eat very little and always something good. Such simple things, never quite attainable when I was young—now simply part and parcel of the more deliberate effort of enjoying and making the best of becoming old.
