The Good Life - 06/01/2023 - Candlelit years

We’ve new neighbors. A young family. There’s a small boy and a little white dog named Bunny. They radiate such energy and illumination! So full of young life and ambition. By contrast, Yumiko and I are dim, soft glowing bulbs, warm and gentle; candlelight really, flickering and so gladly faint. So gladly faint. Thank goodness those brighter days are done. Thank goodness the power’s been turned down. In the evening we slip out the garden gate with our dogs, barely glowing like Venus above the sea. Nobody sees us much now. We glide together along the streets of this town invisible to most, anonymous and becoming old. A plain man and woman and two dogs, set back from the fray and the fight and all that striving. Watching the bright, warm glowing folks and their ways we once knew. And we come home to our garden and our home and our peace. And close the blinds to shut out the harsh light from without. And our two candles glow softly within. Soft and quiet days at last. The brilliant years nearly done and gone.
