I figured something out this morning, discovered one reason why we stay. It’s the inertia of old age, the lost momentum of youth, all spun down and spent, leaving us like heavy trucks stuck in deep sand, wheels spinning, no traction at all. And how much more stuck we become if our truck is full in the back with everything we possess: the stacked and filled boxes in our closets, cupboards crammed with goods, a garage lined and piled with everything imaginable, plus the strange things we never need but carry with us everywhere in the back of our car. And at work too, cluttered things in the drawer with the old stapler we rarely use, and all along the edge of our desk collecting monthly dust. No wonder we don’t go, though we want to. When our full lives are buried up to the wheels in deep sand and the forward motion of youth is gone and fully spent. “Stuck we are,” like Luke Skywalker’s X-wing deep in the muck. Some sort of Force will be needed to get us up from here. Too bad no such Force is truly real.
