The Good Life - 04/02/2023 - Picking a day to retire *

Yumiko and I enjoyed some very good talks yesterday, at lunchtime, and while shopping, and when walking the dogs. The talk was over timing, picking a schedule for when we will each check out of our current life paradigm and into something new. This isn’t just another move, but a wholesale shift in who we are, stepping down from our current primary roles as parents and into new identities of our own choosing. Put that way, the potential shift seems daunting, as we’re both desperately out of practice becoming something new, mom and dad being all we’ve really been and know how to be.

But time won’t wait for us to act or decide, and will instead ossify us into whatever tableau we live during the next decade. This time now is our best, and possibly last, opportunity to act to satisfy whatever latent dreams we still hold before death wipes us both to dust and soon forgotten memory. This isn’t a time to delay or pretend we can wait and decide tomorrow. So for me, I choose December 16th, 2024 as my last day of work. It’s a Monday, and a very good day to begin.
