Emily dropped by last night. She brought with her the bright and optimistic energy and bustle of university life. Positivity simply flowed out of her like radiance from a lamp—everything good and possible, and not a single problem or fuss which cannot be overcome. I remember being like that myself once and at the same age, and I remember also the moment when that stopped, or changed rather, into something else. It was the morning at age twenty-two when I found a freshly dead nearly naked fellow student lying broken on a beach. I crystallized into something else then—innocence vanished and dissapeared. Maybe that’s what happens when young people go to war and come back all grown and something gone.
Others have described to me similar moments of their own sudden life change, when the adult precipitates out of the youth and carries on as someone new. The change can seemingly be sudden or by degree, though I wonder if it can not happen at all?
