The Good Life - 03/29/2023 - The best story I’ve ever met *
Yesterday, I finished Jens Peter Jacobsen’s novel Neils Lyhne, which I promptly added to my short list of must read books. I placed the book right at the end, number eighteen, in the place of honor, right after the Bible, in a series of books ordered according to their unfolding breadth and importance in the story of contemporary, Western human life. The book is that good—the new crown jewel in the treasury kept safe within my mind and memory of everything I can remember of the books that I’ve ever read. This is the book I’ll keep beside my deathbed should I then have the energy or faculty to read; and if not, it is the book I’ll stare at as the light of my life fades, and I draw near to the empty forever. The book is that good. Possibly the best story I’ve ever met.
