The Good Life - 03/10/2023 - Sufficient, if not excellent *

There were kites at the beach yesterday, enormous kites, down by the pier, soaring near, high and steady like great beasts swimming in a steady on-shore wind. It was a club of a sort, a kite-flying club. And the club members were scattered, attending to anything but their kites, which they’d released into the wind and tethered to the earth before going about whatever busyness kept their eyes and attention upon the ground. A man mistook me for a member as I gazed up at a thirty-foot squid swimming with churning tentacles five-stories above my head, tied to lifeguard tower two, no squid-keeper in sight. “What’s going on?” he asked me. Suddenly mute, I shook my head. “Are these yours he continued. “No.” I said—too befuddled from my good book and the monster above to regain the appropriate use of my tongue. The man wandered off, as did I, walking beneath more kites like beasts, and birds, and twirly things and a great eye like God floating above them all. I turned and went back up the beach the other way, my bad leg hurting, beginning to limp, returning to my good book, yet stopping from time to time to look back at the circus menagerie drifting in the sky—glad I hadn’t stayed home that day.
