Another day in this little room. At least there’s rain, which feels like the outdoors so near. I can still hear the sea through the rain, through the closed window even, distant, muffled crashing. The waves must be large—far away water thunder.
Yumiko wasn’t feeling well last night. I hope she’s alright and hasn’t got this. But I‘m almost through with my Covid now, and ready to take up arms on my wife’s behalf if she is sick. Maybe this is practice of sorts for our old age, a changing of the guard as one oldster looks after the other through declining years.
I’ve told Yumiko often how I want to grow old where there is rain, in a time of life when I no more must walk to work through the cold, wet dawn—no more wet feet—but can instead sit with the window open, watching the dark sea falling from the sky; hearing the thrumming, dropping, cadence—like waves, ebbing and flowing with intensity; eyes closed, feeling the cold sea moving without, drinking warm green tea, ocean everywhere beyond—quiet and peace everywhere within.
