The Good Life - 02/13/2023 - Anxiety returns *

The last twenty-four hours since coming back have been hard. But, that’s to be expected after a good vacation, right? As it’s difficult giving up freedom in order to climb back up on the hamster wheel of work and responsibility and paying bills and doing taxes and all the rest. But I’m already on the wheel and running, and things will be fine and normal again by this time next week, possibly sooner, maybe by this afternoon. I know me, and I know that hard work at a difficult job does wonders to recover my spirit and good sense. So, I’m ready to do it—bring on the day!

But, there’s another thread of thought more alive now than before our trip last week to Japan, that is the idea—reality, maybe—that this current life is on a hard trajectory to come to an end. This was just an idea two weeks back, though now it’s something more real. It’s like the reality of sending astronauts to orbit the moon once before returning there later with another mission to attempt a real landing. Yumiko and I have now completed our one time orbit of a new life in Japan and successfully reconnoitered a safe landing zone and way down to the surface. All that remains now is the timing and execution, which still might take years—though what fun we will have until then, planning and scheming and dreaming of our next Great Life Adventure together.

But until then, it’s time to get back to work and do my difficult job with energy, enthusiasm, competence and a most deep and abiding gratitude for the chance to contribute and do well. It’s time now…to work.
