I did another live on-line book signing last night. It was hard understanding and balancing the technology used to support the event, and I made one serious mistake which cut a channel of audio from the Internet stream, making for an awkward and very one-sided conversation with my three guests from Discord. But I’ve figured out the problem and will not likely make this same error again. But it’s always like that with whatever is new—like when Yumiko and I first moved to Huntington Beach and I didn’t know my way around the city and made lots of mistakes driving to the market, gas station and restaurants. Now, we’re three months in and I can get around town mostly without a map, making it increasingly easier to live within this new life venue. Likewise, I expect I’ll continue to stumble for a while while I practice, learn and tune the technology used to support my on-going live book signing events. But I’ll get that down too, and this new on-line routine—like the driving I do to get around my new city—will soon look and feel like an activity I’ve done all my life, and I’ll then become a “local” to this new place, and to this new work. I just need to maintain the patience and resolve to accept the many mistakes and false starts encountered along the way, which are simply the price which must be paid for each and every Great Life Adventure into the new, the different, and the unknown.
