As I age, I look back on the preceding decades like the acts in a great play which we are all compelled to perform to a greater or lesser degree: The romance, drama and adventure of our twenties; settling down to start a family in our thirties; the long trudge of responsibility during our forties and fifties; and the dawn of freedom in our sixties at the onset of infirmity and old age. It’s such a perfectly written play, exactly what our species needs to succeed under the harsh paradigm of the natural world. The yield of course is living long enough to see our children have children, after which point the mission is done and our next responsibility is to fill a grave and get out of the way. Cradle to grave—again and again, over and over, like dominoes falling in a forever chain of life success.
