I awoke this morning with the sharpest mind I can remember. Where did this come from? Clarity of thought like my twenties. Halcyon days returned! Nothing significant has happened. I didn’t sleep especially well last night. And my body sure isn’t getting any better: Fatigue—check! Heart—check! Arthritis—check! Tumor—check! So, what the heck is going on? I know what it is. It’s because the stress is fading. I finally seem to have summited the mountain of my worry and have begun coasting down the other side. Emily is grown and well. My books are mostly done. My career is coming to an end. My health? Who cares. Really, I don’t care. That doesn’t bother me in the slightest now. What matter is it if I’m dead for eternity or dead for eternity plus a couple of years? That’s not important at all. I feel good today, great in fact! And my mind is in sharp form and eager for poetry and art. And there’s the beach and sea waiting for me after work. And a few walks with the dogs and a delicious dinner with my wife before bed. What’s not to love about today? And tomorrow can be like this too. Until it isn’t. Until at last my body and mind succumb and fall to pieces and I wither and die. And that’s alright too.
