Indian Summer has passed. October is here. The beach was chill yesterday. And I sat on the sand, dripping wet from the sea, shivering cold and relishing the sense of being alive. There was another living then nearby, a young boy, perhaps ten-years old, swimming alone in the waves just down the sand. His father was close, seated watching upon the beach, while the boy paddled alone on a soft foam board into the waves. The waves which threw the boy up and down in a tumult and back and forth onto the shore. The waves were strong and the boy was alone in the sea. Just his father and me watching. The boy was alright. Relentless in his joy. As familiar in the sea as at home in his own backyard. I watched and I shivered and I remembered the summer which was here just yesterday. Soon, even the boy will stop coming. His father or mother will tell him soon that the day and the ocean are too cold, and that he should stay home to play safely indoors. Yet the sea will churn and move and toss and roar until he returnsâeven if he never returns.
