☀️ The Good Life - 09/29/2023 - A daily mountain

Updated: Oct 19

I always prepare a checklist before the sun rises. Before first light, I have a plan. The list has two columns: one for work on the left side of the paper, while my personal list is on the right side. I order the items on the list according to my plan of execution. And whatever remains undone today goes first on the list for tomorrow. It’s an effective system.

I’ve discovered that my sense of well-being correlates with the status of my list, as I feel better when more items are marked complete than not. Lately, I’ve begun drawing a small mountain symbol next to just one item on each day’s list—the hardest and most important item. I call this item my “mountain” for the day, which is the thing I must climb in order to feel great about my work. And I’ve found that climbing my mountain—marking that item done—always does the trick. It’s my secret little pathway to happiness and peace, especially at work, to identify, tackle and successfully complete, the single most difficult, scary and important task of the day. Now that I know this, I invariably always do that hardest thing first. And what a difference this has made.
