The Good Life - 07/12/2023 - Old woman at the pharmacy
A woman spoke to me at the pharmacy yesterday. We were seated close to one another, waiting for our prescriptions to be called. The woman asked me how my day was going, though our small talk soon went rather deep. She was a psychiatrist, retired more than twenty years. She told me she’d spent her whole working life helping other people with their problems, yet in the end she couldn’t help herself. She told me old age was hard, and that she struggled with pain and depression, and that she’d never figured out what to do with her life after her career was done—twenty years of nothing to do. Her name was soon called, and then mine, and we spoke again as she walked past me—still in line—on her way to leave. I wished her well and she wished the same to me. She thanked me for listening and I thanked her for her past professional care and service to others, and I told her that I hoped for the best with her pain.
