I must type quickly this morning as I’m having my heart scanned at 6:45 and I don’t want to be late. I rather enjoy such trips to the doctor, which remind me so well of my frail mortality and always nearing day of death. I come away from each doctor visit like a man emerging from a spa: warmed and stimulated and motivated towards an improved and better life of virtue—convinced to live well and discontinue my wanton days of waste.
Maybe I’ll drop by a graveyard after I’m done having my heart checked—to walk among the dead and remember that I too will soon be among them, dead and gone and then utterly forgot. It’s a good use of time to be sure. And then I’ll go to the beach and swim for a bit in the warm sea. And then return home to kiss my wife, and pat the heads of each of my dogs, enjoy a fine, simple lunch and then spend the afternoon and evening in our pretty garden, with a good book and my guitar; maybe write a poem or two, with my feet bare in the soft, cool grass—time moving slowly, like a great glacier gliding gently into the sea.
