The Good Life - 03/24/2023 - After the last fight

I worked a fifteen-hour day yesterday, and I really feel it. Such days were much easier once, when I was younger, and stamina was a match for resolve. No more. Resolve must stand on its own now—a wobbly affair. Waking up next day, I feel the way an old boxer might who’s been clobbered to the mat and then rises to one elbow with stars before his eyes, wondering why he remains in the ring. Just a few more rounds, just a few more fights. It’s all part of the plan, a step in the scheme, rope-a-dope, where I’m the dope. But I get to leave one day with a great sense of accomplishment, mission complete, goal achieved—and I can go then to my quiet bench under the canopy of the shrine tree beside our little house, with my book and my bottle of tea, and watch children play, and read, and think, and rest, and maybe be at peace from the struggle and the fight of getting by.
