The Good Life - 03/08/2023 - I did my duty

Yumiko asked me yesterday if anyone would notice if we silently slipped away from America. It was during our lunchtime dog walk, when we were both exhausted from a tough morning of work and not looking forward to the afternoon round two. The idea made me smile, and we laughed as I described to her how I could could recreate my little studio office for Zoom meetings; work nights, and nobody would know. A silly thought. They’d know…

We never had such talks when our daughter was small; duty being an unspoken given then. But duty is different now that our purpose has changed with the empty-nest. Thoughts and words can now be spoken, discussed and even joked about which were once taboo and not to be thought or said. For, I was only half-joking when I told Yumiko that it would be fun to see how long we could keep up the ruse of working from far away before we were discovered and fired and set free? And I knew then from her laugh that she too was in on the joke, alright with the risk, and even game for a try. And though I know we won’t do this, I’m delighted to discover what a conspiratorial pair we’ve become.
