I’m anticipating this coming trip to Japan like none before. In the past, I’ve fretted over the details of travel, the obstacles and expense as well as nagging reminders of what I think I should be doing besides having a fun time together with my wife. Those concerns are silent—utterly quiet. I think this is due to my age, and the fact that Emily is grown, and the constant dream of quiet retirement that lingers in my mind always now like a sweet hunger for breakfast at dawn. There’s no time left frankly for nonsense worry or doubt, even if the worries are real, we’ll work ‘em out—we always do. So, this weekend, Yumiko and I will plan and scheme with abandon our coming two weeks back home in Japan, and we’ll go there and perhaps find our last community, and a place to hang our hats for good and done, someplace where past challenges become sweet with memory and new challenges can be met away from the fray of midlife, within the calculated and decided venue of oncoming old age.
