The Good Life - 12/14/2022 - Summoning my worry

I’m going in to work at the office today, which is something I stopped doing since moving to the beach. It’s a long commute to the desert—which is too bad, as I prefer working from work. I like my cubicle, and I like the feeling of being at the office; the sense of putting on the work day like a nice-fitting shirt, seeing my coworkers, hearing them talk and laugh and even getting upset sometimes in the surrounding cubicles. “You alright over there?” “I’m good, I just forgot to set up a meeting. Thanks for asking. Wanna go to lunch?” Working from home is certainly efficient. But, I don’t like it…feels too much like home.

Working from home is like having dessert with dinner, the two should be kept separate and with a little margin in between. Sweet following savory. Leisure after labor.

I make the work from home thing work though, and I will for a few more years. But I do relish days like today. When I get to actually go in to work, to sit up straight in my chair pounding out emails under strong fluorescent lights, wearing uncomfortable shoes while walking the halls briskly, smiling and saying hi to everyone I see, and today even the chance to attend our end-of-year party. Too bad I don’t have an ugly sweater to wear though… Next year, for sure! After all, I must make good use of these rarer days at the office. I must not waste or take them for granted—or forget my gratitude for the opportunity to belong.
