The Good Life - 08/21/2023 - Storm swim
I
went into the ocean yesterday despite the storm. The waves were the biggest I’ve seen since 1985, and the great storms which raged upon the coast of Northern California when I lived there. When I got in the water a strong current pulled me north, while huge walls of churning white-water pressed me back in towards shore. The rain came down steady, and a strong wind blew flying foam through the air. I was scared. I felt old. Like a foolish old man playing dangerous games with powers far beyond him. I soon got out and went to drip nearly naked upon the beach. The cool rain pelted my bare skin while warm air from Mexico made me feel I was somewhere far south of California, maybe Baja or even Cabo. I stood for a long time in the warm southern storm wind, my muscles stretched from my swim and my skin taut and brown from this summertime life by the sea. I told myself “Remember this moment, Kurt. This is one of those fleeting life treasures.” I stopped thinking then and simply stood alone in my swimsuit in the rain and the wind while watching the sea roar and heave. Soon, I went home. And I told Yumiko of my experience. She asked if I was scared. I said I was. And such a delicious fear it was.
