Itâs nice getting old. Thereâs no age better than now, though I expect tomorrow might be better still. Sure, Iâm a bit crippled with arthritis and my damaged left leg. And I can no longer drive very far without the need of a roadside nap. And thereâs my heart, and that growing thing they dug out of me which proved benign. And my mental acuityâdulling now like an old knife in need of a grind. But rather than distracting me with worry, these ailments stimulate me to live. âCause I know theyâre coming for me. I canât get away. But I can live well in the time that remains. Like a man in an old pickle barrel enjoying a watery splash and ride towards the edge of Niagaraâpoking out of my barrel, such a view and what a thrill to yet simply be! Yes, itâs really nice getting old. Thereâs really no age better than now. And I do expect tomorrow might be better still than todayâif only because Iâve tried my best to live well in what time does remain.
