The Good Life - 06/06/2023 - Life’s a stage
Parenthood now reminds me of the childhood years, in particular the school events where our kid was an actor in the play, participating somewhere up there on stage, amidst a crowd of little actors, hidden behind costumes and hats, and weaving and moving before contrived sets of feign storytelling. Back then, Yumiko and I would strain from our seats near the back of the room, bobbing our necks to get a glimpse of our daughter’s pretend life as the old woman in the play about Momotaro, or another singer in the annual school pageant. Now, things are different, yet the same. Emily is grown and beginning life on her own; only the stage now is the world and the actors are all of us. The costumes are still contrived, as is the script and every scene. And her mother and I are still at the back of the room, watching and straining to see, eager to witness our daughter’s life from afar, striving to catch glimpses and sightings of her up there on the stage, childhood’s practice and play now become something more real. Her own life story having now begun.
