The Good Life - 06/01/2023 - Intervention *

Intervention! Yumiko and I were intervened, stopped in our tracks, prevented by our daughter from making a big mistake. I was sitting in the garden after work, strumming my guitar, waiting for Yumiko to finish her work so we could begin our evening together. My phone suddenly rang. It was Emily calling from Japan. “We need to talk” she said, as I walked indoors to include Yumiko in the conversation. “It’s about that house.” She was referring to the old haunted house Yumiko and I call the “Hirayama House” which we were probably then less than an hour away from deciding to buy. Emily’s call and timing were perfect, as she’s been at the house, and is visiting in the area now, this week, as she is staying with her family in Japan. “This isn’t the right place” she said, adding “Here’s why...” The things Emily told us made sense, and I watched my wife’s face as the decisiveness drained from us both, replaced instead with a look of relief of being saved by our daughter from our own folly and mistake. Later, during our evening walk with the dogs, Yumiko and I said our goodbyes to the Hirayama House and discussed our next steps, the resumption of our search, and the splendid pearls of wisdom shared with us by Emily, who took the time to ring us up just in the nick of time, to intervene and share her informed and on the ground opinion and perspective—to help us see the light.

Thank you, Emily. Our search continues.
