The Good Life - 05/04/2023 - Literature, poetry, art

These last 24 hours! What is going on? It’s like something switched on, and my brain and body and resolve suddenly aligned like Iron Man’s costume coming together to form someone new. It’s due to a couple of things, I think—all related to decision making and resolve. We’re coming into the home-stretch of our daughter’s university life and we pulled the triggers in April on some big decisions. First, we got Emily set up for her summer internship in Japan (which I’m frankly more excited about than I can adequately express). Second, we got Emily squared away for housing for her last year of university, snagging the very last available room in the apartment complex where she wanted to live. Earlier in the month, Yumiko and I sat down and made a firm decision to return to Japan in 2024. We even picked our dates, and I even told my boss. Next, Yumiko and I both visited our doctor (we have the same doctor) who checked us both out and is now helping us to get and remain healthy. Finally, I’ve begun allowing myself to honestly imagine and plan how I will spend my time during the coming decade of my sixties. And that last bit’s done the trick. Literature, poetry, art. And lots of time to “walk and think.”
