I approached the screaming man and asked him simply, “stingray?” He nodded. My car was nearby and I offered to drive him home with his surfboard in the back. He thanked me and said his bicycle was close and that he could ride home. I asked if he knew to put his wounded limb into very hot water, which he did, while showing me an enormous half-inch flap of pale, blood-drained flesh atop his foot, covering a deep wound which was gushing blood and filled with venom designed by nature to deliver excruciating localized pain as well as long term systemic effects, including flesh necrosis. I understood the pain he was experiencing, having known it myself some years before and under very similar circumstances. Screaming was acceptable, to be expected. “You sure I can’t give you a ride?” I asked. “I’m good.” he said, as he climbed on his bike and rode off down Seventeenth Street towards home, screaming loudly in agony as his bloody foot pressed the pedal after leaving many bloody footprints on the pavement where he’d stood. I knew he’d be better when he got home and plunged his foot into a hot bath. And while descending the steps to the sand, I could still hear his screams growing fainter from a half block away.
