The Good Life - 04/09/2023 - Old tree in the yard

Emily might visit today. Every time she comes she’s someone new. Bit by bit university life, and living away from us and on her own, carries her into someone new. It’s an ancient process for sure, new life taking the place of old, but outfitted and equipped for its own world and paradigm way of being. And each time she comes I perceive her increasing will and self-control. One day soon she’ll no longer need us really. Sure, she’ll still need us kinda, like the young always need the old—kinda. Less and less, like a familiar and comforting old tree in the yard, a safe and familiar place to play under when small, lovely to see and remember as we grow to adult, less and less needed, always good it’s there, ‘till one day a stong wind knocks the old tree over and it’s gone, leaving a hole which soon grows over with grass and weeds. “There was a tree there once,” Emily might someday tell her kids with a look in her eyes. Adding perhaps, “Let’s go play under the trees.”
