I was thinking today how this prolonged illness is making me fall behind in the parade. Not yet. Not really. Though I feel it’s happening if I don’t get better and keep up. We’re all of us marching together in a stream like a parade at Fourth of July. Waving flags and pushing floats, leading dogs, juggling, playing music, dancing and all the rest. Though gradually each of us begins to falter and fall away, slowing and drifting back through the ranks, others stepping around us with sidelong glances or perhaps taking an arm to help us keep up. But still we slow and further falter—insisting at last to be allowed to sit. And so we join the watchers of the parade by the sidelines, the others like ourselves who can’t or won’t keep up. And we watch together as the parade continues to pass. It never stops, going on just fine like we were never part.
