There’s nothing like a brush with a dangerous virus to make me wonder if I’m wasting much time in life. It’s a dress rehearsal for the real deal, if not the real deal itself. The question is: what exactly constitutes a well-lived life? And what does it mean to be ready to die? For me, it’s about the effort—if not the end—of the fulfillment of responsibility which we deem important; and the living of a life of virtue, where virtue is defined as nothing more than our efforts undertaken to improve the well being of thinking creatures; and the effort—again, if not the fulfillment—of our decided personal ambition. So yeah, a brush with a dangerous virus can be a scary thing, especially if I’m without any good measure of what the danger really is.
