The Good Life - 01/30/2023 - Deep warmth after the cold *

Yumiko and I worked hard yesterday getting ready for our trip, topping off our Santa sack of omiyage gifts and deciding what clothes we will bring and how to pack everything. And while Yumiko shopped and packed, I worked on the computer to refine our day to day itinerary, adding landmark waypoints along our three day driving journey from the west to the east coast of the Izu Peninsula, plotting on the map the locations of the akiya homes we want to see and arranging things in logistically sound order. Yumiko also spent time reviewing restaurants where we can eat, asking me what I want to enjoy and enduring my less than helpful answer “everything!” I think we’re nearly ready to go.

This will truly be a holiday with a mission, though not a mission so firm we can’t improvise along the way. We’ll be like two kids coloring a life adventure with broad, bold crayons; creating a more impromptu picture of fun, journey and transition at age fifty-eight than we might possibly have pulled off at any age younger than the age we are just now.
